Some channels are broadcast in formats that simply bring the Raspberry Pi to its knees; if that happens, the fix is pretty simple: just reduce the resolution and maybe the frame rate of the encoder. 720 / 24 fps usually makes it smooth right out. The HDHomeRun does not transcode but we have to transcode on our side to make those streams compatible across the board.

Why isn't there an option for 4k in the resolution drop-down of the encoder(s)?

Most capture cards (USB dongles) can't actually capture 4k; they will advertise 4k, but that's usually just the pass-through.
- Yes, there are better capture cards, but they get much more expensive and...

Even if they did, the Raspberry Pi encoders would struggle.
- So why can't we use a better SoC or better encoding hardware?
- We've tried several devices, and while they do work, they also get exponentially more expensive. As of this post, we are not interested in those; however, this is being reevaluated often.

Even if the Raspberry Pi didn't struggle, the network would.
- but what about wired networks... well, that likely would be ok but there are still the first 2 issues at play

DisplayHUB is not meant to compete with the high-end, very expensive, hardware-based HDMI systems; we did that for many years and decided that the squeeze was not worth the juice, so to speak. There are plenty of systems out there that offer 4k, but they lack the features we offer, such as being wireless, overlays, image injection, and a long list of other things, but if you do in fact require 4k, we can offer consultation services.

4k isn't really even 4k in many cases, and the honest opinion is that unless you are checking all the boxes for 4k, side by side, at 10 feet, it's simply not as noticeable.

Now, we are aware there will be several rebuttals to the opinion (and facts) above, but we do not currently support 4k. The urge to ask "Can't we use ________?" is a valid one, but we support a specific stack right now, and while we reconsider and reanalyze often, until we have determined it's feasible, we will not be supporting encoders outside of what we already have built.
