Access DisplayHUB Remotely with Tailscale

Tailscale creates a private, encrypted network between your devices so you can control and monitor your DisplayHUB system from anywhere — your phone, laptop, or office computer — without exposing anything to the internet and without complicated firewall or port forwarding setup.

How It Works

Tailscale is a free app that connects your devices using WireGuard, a modern VPN protocol. When installed on your network router, Tailscale makes your entire local network — including your DisplayHUB controller and encoders — reachable from anywhere as if you were sitting on-site. Nothing on the DisplayHUB hardware needs to be configured.

There is no server in the middle storing your data. The connection is peer-to-peer and encrypted end-to-end. Tailscale’s free plan supports up to 3 users and 100 devices, which is more than enough for most DisplayHUB installations.

What you’ll be able to do remotely:

  • Open the DisplayHUB controller dashboard and change sources or layouts
  • Reboot encoders or check stream status
  • Adjust encoder settings without being on-site
  • Give your IT person or a DisplayHUB technician access for remote support

What You Need

Tailscale runs on your network router — not on the DisplayHUB hardware itself. This means your router needs to support Tailscale. Many modern routers do, and if yours doesn’t, a small inexpensive router can be added to your network alongside your existing one.

GL.iNet Recommended

Tailscale is built directly into the GL.iNet web interface — no command line, no technical setup. A single toggle enables it. GL.iNet routers start around $50 and are our top recommendation for DisplayHUB venues. They can be used as your primary router or plugged in alongside your existing one.

Firewalla

Firewalla is a popular security router with native Tailscale support built into the Firewalla app. If you’re already using a Firewalla device at your venue, you can enable Tailscale directly from the app with no additional hardware needed.

pfSense / OPNsense

If your venue runs pfSense or OPNsense as its firewall, a Tailscale plugin is available for both platforms. This is common in venues with more advanced IT infrastructure and an existing managed network.

OpenWRT

OpenWRT is open-source firmware available for many consumer routers. If your router runs OpenWRT, Tailscale can be installed via the package manager. Check the OpenWRT package list or contact your IT person to see if your router is compatible.

Setting Up Tailscale on a GL.iNet Router (Step by Step)

GL.iNet routers are our recommendation for DisplayHUB venues. Here’s how to get Tailscale running in about five minutes.

Step 1

Create a free account at tailscale.com. You can sign up with a Google, Microsoft, or GitHub account — no password needed.

Step 2

Log into your GL.iNet router at 192.168.8.1. Go to VPN → Tailscale and click Enable. The router will show you a login link — open it and sign into your Tailscale account.

Step 3

In the GL.iNet Tailscale settings, enable Allow Remote Access LAN. This is the subnet routing toggle — it makes all devices on your local network reachable, not just the router itself.

Step 4

Install the Tailscale app on your phone or laptop and sign into the same account. You can now reach your DisplayHUB controller and encoders at their normal local IP addresses from anywhere.

Accessing DisplayHUB Once You’re Connected

Once Tailscale is running, open a browser on your phone or laptop and navigate to your DisplayHUB controller the same way you would on-site — using the same local IP address you use at the venue. Tailscale makes your remote device appear to be on the local network, so nothing about the DisplayHUB dashboard changes.

Finding Your DisplayHUB IP Address

If you’re not sure of the local IP address for your DisplayHUB controller, check your router’s connected devices list. The device will appear with a hostname starting with displayhub or raspberrypi. For a permanent setup, assign the Pi a static IP in your router’s DHCP reservation settings so the address never changes.

Approving Subnet Routes (One-Time Step)

After enabling subnet routing on your router, Tailscale requires you to approve the route in the admin panel before it goes live. Log into login.tailscale.com, go to Machines, find your router, click the three-dot menu, and select Edit route settings. Enable the subnet route that appears. You only need to do this once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this secure?

Yes. Tailscale uses WireGuard, which is widely considered the most secure and modern VPN protocol available. All traffic between your devices is encrypted. Nothing is exposed to the public internet — only devices logged into your Tailscale account can reach your DisplayHUB system.

Does Tailscale cost anything?

Tailscale’s free plan supports up to 3 users and 100 devices, which covers the vast majority of DisplayHUB installations. Paid plans are available for larger teams or additional features like shared access across multiple accounts.

Can I give my IT person access?

Yes. In the Tailscale admin panel you can invite additional users to your tailnet. They install Tailscale on their device, accept the invite, and can then reach your DisplayHUB system. You can remove their access at any time from the admin panel.

Will it work if the internet goes down at the venue?

No — Tailscale requires internet connectivity at the venue to establish the remote connection. However, your DisplayHUB system continues to operate normally on-site without internet; you just won’t be able to access it remotely until the connection is restored.

Can DisplayHUB support access my system remotely?

If you add your DisplayHUB technician to your Tailscale network, we can log into your system remotely to troubleshoot issues, update software, or make configuration changes without needing to be on-site. This is entirely optional and under your control — you can remove access at any time.

My router doesn’t support Tailscale. What do I do?

A GL.iNet router ($40–$60) can be added between your existing router and the DisplayHUB equipment without replacing anything. It handles Tailscale while your main router stays unchanged. Contact DisplayHUB support for a recommendation based on your setup.

Need Help Getting Set Up?

Contact DisplayHUB support and we can walk you through the Tailscale setup for your specific router and network, or join your tailnet remotely to assist if you’re already connected.
